On Monday April 01, Israeli airstrikes destroyed Iran’s consulate in Damascus, Syria. The attack killed at least six Syrian civilians and seven Iranian military advisors, of which three were senior commanders. Israel stated their primary target was an Iranian Brigadier General, Mohammad Reza Zahedi. Following the attack, Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad stated: ”We strongly condemn this atrocious terrorist attack that targeted the Iranian consulate building in Damascus and killed a number of innocents.”

The following is a collection of horrifying personal recounts from Palestinians who bore witness to Israel’s violent raid on Al-Shifa hospital shared today by Raseef22. “The soldiers entered the hospital wards and called out to the men through loudspeakers, ordering them to go downstairs.They informed them that they would play a game of hide-and-seek, and whoever disobeys their orders would be killed.”

On Monday, Israeli Forces withdrew from Gaza’s Al-Shifa hospital after a gruesome two week military raid, leaving hundreds of Palestinian civilians detained and hundreds more killed. What was Gaza’s largest medical facility is now a “wasteland of destroyed buildings”, “littered with human remains” and “mutilated bodies”.

This week Francesca Albanese, the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the occupied Palestinian Territories, released a report on the current situation entitled ‘Anatomy of a Genocide’. Accompanying the 25 page report, Albanese addressed the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva.  “Following nearly six months of unrelenting Israeli assault on occupied Gaza, it is my solemn duty to report on the worst of what humanity is capable of, and to present my findings.”

On Monday Israel commenced a planned attack and siege on Gaza’s Al-Shifa hospital where an estimated 30,000 displaced, sick and injured Palestinian civilians are currently taking refuge. The previous large-scale invasion of Al-Shifa on November 11 left hundreds of Palestinian patients and doctors killed or injured. Al-Shifa has been one of the few remaining hospitals still able to partially operate, due to ongoing Israeli airstrikes on hospitals and aid facilities.

New report by the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) and Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) states “Famine is imminent in the northern part of the Gaza Strip and the entire population of Gaza is facing crisis levels of food insecurity or worse”. In Gaza’s two northern governorates, where around 300,000 people remain trapped, “famine is now projected and imminent” within the next two months, between mid-March and May.

As the world celebrates International Women’s Day (IWD), UNRWA has reported that on average, 63 women are killed in Gaza each day. On IWD, the Ministry of Health reported at least 9,000 Palestinian women have been killed since Israel launched its genocidal assault on Gaza, with hundreds still missing, buried under the rubble.

Thursday February 29, 2024. Today Israeli forces opened fire on Palestinians waiting to collect desperately needed food aid in Gaza, killing more than 112 Palestinians and injuring more than 750. The Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the cold-blooded “massacre”, part of Israel’s ongoing “genocidal war”. Al Jazeera described the massacre as part of Israel’s “systematic attacks”.

For the third time in the past 137 days, the US has used its veto power in the United Nations Security Council to block a resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire. The United States was the only vote against. The United Kingdom abstained, and all remaining 13 member countries voted in favour of the ceasefire.

“In late January, I left my home in Virginia, where I work as a plastic and reconstructive surgeon and joined a group of physicians and nurses… to volunteer in Gaza. I have worked in other war zones. But what I witnessed during the next 10 days in Gaza was not war — it was annihilation.  At least 28,000 Palestinians have been killed in Israel’s bombardment of Gaza.”

In Basle, Switzerland in 1897 the first Zionist Congress meeting took place, led by Zionist leader Theodor Herzl. As described by Ben White in his book ‘Israeli Apartheid’, this initial meeting held “profound and disastrous consequences for the Palestinians - though they were not present at the event or even mentioned”. At the beginning of the 20th century, the population of Palestine was around 4 percent Jewish, and 96 percent Palestinian Arab.

Within the first four days of February Israeli airstrikes have continued to target designated “Safe Zones” in Gaza, killing hundreds of Palestinian citizens, despite Israel receiving an order from the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to prevent all acts of genocide. After months of ongoing destruction of northern Gaza, the intensified attacks on southern and central “Safe zones” strikes a new level in Israel’s genocide campaign.

On January 11 2024, South Africa presented its case to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) pertaining to Israel’s alleged violation of the Court’s 1948 ‘Genocide Convention’. South Africa’s Ms Adila Hassim presented evidence and statistics of the “genocidal acts that have led to this urgent request”, arguing Israel’s actions are “genocidal in character”, and in direct violation of “Article II of the Convention, by committing actions that fall within the definition of genocide”. In her opening statement, Ms Hassim stated Israel’s “actions show a systematic pattern of conduct from which genocide can be inferred”.

On January 11 2024, South Africa presented its case to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) pertaining to Israel’s alleged violation of the Court’s 1948 ‘Genocide Convention’. South Africa’s Mr Tembeka Ngcukaitobi argued Israel’s intent of committing Genocide against the Palestinian population, with the following key points: Israel’s systematic conduction of genocidal acts; intent to destroy Gaza’s Palestinian population in whole or in part; and the continual genocidal speech implemented by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, political and military leaders, and IDF soldiers.

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) met in The Hague on the 11th of January, and will meet again on the 12th. The Court meets under Article 74 paragraph 3 of the Rules of Court, to hear South Africa’s case against Israel concerning the ‘Application of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide in the Gaza Strip’. South Africa’s application pertains to Israel’s violations of its obligations under the ‘Genocide Convention’ created in 1948. The case invokes Article 36 paragraph 1 of the Statute of the Court and Article IX of the Genocide Convention.

On the 29th of December South Africa launched a case to the International Court of Justice alleging that Israel’s military campaign in Gaza amounts to Genocide. At the core of South Africa’s case is the 1948 ‘Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide’, a convention created in the aftermath of World War II and the Holocaust. The convention defines Genocide as acts  “committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group”.

This week Christian leaders and municipal authorities in Bethlehem announced cancelling all public festivities this Christmas, in solidarity with Gaza. This year the roads in Bethlehem are empty, businesses are closed, and hotels are vacant. Manger Square and the Church of Nativity, sacred sites for over 2.5 billion christians around the world, are silent. While majority of Palestinians practise Islam, Christian traditions are intimately tied to Palestine. Palestine is home to some of the holiest sites for Christianity, including the Church of Nativity in Bethlehem and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in East Jerusalem. This year is vastly different, “Flashes of happiness — if they come — are often drenched in guilt”, shared Al-Jazeera. 

DECEMBER 19, 2023.

On Monday December 18, Human Rights Watch issued a report on the Israeli government’s use of starvation of Palestinian civilians as a method of warfare in Gaza. "Israeli forces are deliberately blocking the delivery of water, food, and fuel, while willfully impeding humanitarian assistance, razing agricultural areas, and depriving the civilian population of objects indispensable to their survival”, reported Human Rights Watch. Prior to October 7 2023, 1.2 million Palestinians in Gaza were estimated to be facing acute food insecurity, and over 80 percent were reliant on humanitarian aid. Due to Israel’s 16 year long closure of Gaza, it controls much of Gaza’s access to basic needs including fuel, electricity, medicine and food. On October 9 2023, Israel imposed a “total blockage” on Gaza and has since continued to limit or deny all entrance of humanitarian aid.
